Invited Speaker: Dr. Michael Hamilton, Professor of Biology at UC Riverside and Director of the James Reserve
Date:
July 13, 2007
Time:
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Venue: CENS Main Conference Room, 3551 Boelter Hall, UCLA
Through photos, videos and computer graphics, Dr. Hamilton will take us on a global journey of scientific invention, exploration and discovery as he highlights many of the field studies and scientific activities that have led him through his professional career in conservation biology and environmental sciences.
Dr. Hamilton is celebrating his 25th year as Resident Director of the James Reserve, a biological research station situated in our mountains that is part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. His research crosses many fields from studies of endangered species, to understanding the ecological role of wild fires, to developing new sensing technologies for measuring the "pulse" of ecosystems and the local effects of a changing climate from the perspective of soils, plant growth, wildlife habitats, and coral reefs. As most for you know, the James Reserve is one of the CENS test beds for embedded and distributed sensing systems, including terrestrial ecology applications, and is slated to become the instrumented systems testbed for NEON, the National Ecological Observatory Network, later this year.
