Introduction
We are pleased to announce the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) 7th Annual Research Review – Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at the Sunset Village Grand Horizon Ballroom, UCLA Campus.
CENS is a major research enterprise engaged in the development of wireless sensor systems and the application of revolutionary sensing technology to critical scientific and social applications. Each year, members of the Center and partners from across the world gather for a day-long symposium to communicate recent results and accomplishments in this rapidly developing field. We invite you to join us as we highlight our measurement and sensing technologies and look forward to future developments.
In addition to presentations highlighting recent developments by our researchers, we are pleased to host the Microsoft’s Eric Horvitz as our keynote speaker. The day will be rounded out by a poster/demonstration session spotlighting the technical innovations fostered by the Center.
Date: October 28, 2009
Time: 8:30am – 2:30pm
Location: UCLA Campus, Covel Commons 3rd Floor - Sunset Village Grand Horizon Ballroom
Keynote Speaker: Eric Horvitz
Talk Title:
Sensing, Learning, and Intelligence: Frontiers and Futures
Abstract:
Systems that sense, learn, and reason from streams of data promise to provide extraordinary value to people and society. I will discuss research on the coupling of sensing with machine learning and inference, highlighting key ideas in the context of projects in healthcare, transportation, energy conservation, and online services. After reviewing efforts in several realms, I will reflect on directions regarding the capture and use of data in accordance with the preferences of people about their privacy.
About the Keynote Speaker
Eric Horvitz is a Principal Researcher and Research Area Manager at Microsoft Research. His interests span theoretical and practical challenges with developing systems that sense, learn, and reason. His contributions include advances in principles of learning and decision making, and the fielding of applications in multiple realms including healthcare, information retrieval, location-based services, and ecommerce. Eric is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and has served as President of the organization. He is also Associate Editor of the Journal of the ACM and a member of the NSF CISE Advisory Board. He has served on the DARPA Information Science and Technology Study Group (ISAT), on the Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC), and on the Carnegie-Mellon University Machine Learning Advisory Board. Eric received his PhD and MD degrees at Stanford University. More information can be found at http://research.microsoft.com/~horvitz.
