CENS 4th Annual Research Review

Agenda | Posters

We are pleased to announce that the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) 4th Annual Research Review will be held on October 27, 2006 at the Tom Bradley International Center located on the UCLA campus. The Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) at UCLA is a major research enterprise engaged in the development of wireless sensor systems and the application of revolutionary sensing technology to critical scientific and societal applications. Visit the CENS homepage to learn more about CENS and its technology research. Each year, members of the center and partners from across the world gather for a day-long symposium to communicate recent result and accomplishments in this fast paced field. This year marks our 4th CENS Research Review. We invite you to join us as we highlight our research accomplishments, report the results of novel scientific studies that utilize cutting- edge measurement and sensing technologies, and look toward future opportunities. In addition to an exciting suite of presentations by our faculty, student, and staff engineers and scientists, we are pleased to feature professor Joseph Paradiso of the MIT Media Laboratory as our keynote speaker, dozens of posters and demonstrations spotlighting the technical innovation fostered by the center, and plenty of stimulating colleagues.

Date: October 27, 2006
Time: 8am-6pm
Location: Tom Bradley International Center, UCLA Campus

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:

Joseph Paradiso, Sony Career Development Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences MIT Media Laboratory

Joseph Paradiso is the Sony Career Development Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Laboratory, where he directs the Responsive Environments group, and co-directed the Things That Think Consortium, a group of industry sponsors and Media Lab researchers who explore the extreme fringe of embedded computation, communication, and sensing. After receiving a BS in Electrical Engineering and Physics summa cum laude from Tufts University in 1977, Paradiso became a K.T. Compton fellow at the Lab for Nuclear Science at MIT, receiving his PhD in physics there in 1981 for research conducted at CERN in Geneva. After two years developing precision drift chambers at the Lab for High Energy Physics at ETH in Zurich, he joined the Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, MA in 1984, where his research encompassed spacecraft control systems, image processing algorithms, underwater sonar, and precision alignment sensors for large high-energy physics detectors. He joined the Media Lab in 1994, where his current research interests include sensor systems for human-computer interaction, wireless sensor networks, and ubiquitous computing. His honors include the 2000 Discover Magazine Award for Technological Innovation, and he has authored over 100 articles and technical reports on topics ranging from computer music to energy harvesting.
