Program Components

CENS Tech Camp: James Reserve Ecological Facility, Idyllwild, California

As part of the first week, Summer@CENS participants will enjoy a trip to the CENS test bed site located at the James Reserve Ecological Facility in Idyllwild, California. This activity is designed to allow participants to see CENS technology in the field, understand some of the constraints that our researchers work with and get their hands dirty by assisting our researchers in the field.

Professional Development Series

Students will engage a series of workshops that will provide an exposure to the world of academic research. Workshop titles include:

  • Ramping-up: getting organized and diving in
  • Faculty Showcase: pathways to professorship
  • Post-graduation Opportunities, and
  • Ethics in Research.

Weekly Progress Meetings

Each team member will have the opportunity to present progress on their project at least twice through the summer.  Weekly meetings will be held weekly and moderated by one or more of your mentors.  Each student team will be assigned to a particular week and will be given approximately 5-6 minutes to discuss their project.  Power point presentations should include a brief background, current work, challenges and next steps.  This activity is designed to give interns the opportunity to hone their presentation skills to an academic audience and to receive feedback from their fellow students and mentors.

Weekly Progress Report Guidelines (powerpoint)

Writing Workshop

Build your writing skills by joining our weekly small writing group and peer review.  As part of your final project each intern will be required to complete a final project paper.  This project has, in the past, aided students in maintaining good progress of their work through the 8 – 10 weeks as well as prepared them to submit for publication in a journal or presentation at a conference.

Final Poster Session

The culmination of our participant’s work is celebrated at the Summer@CENS Final Poster Session, held at the end of the 8th week of the program. Each team will present a poster reflecting their research over the 8 weeks of the program. The entire CENS community, Summer@CENS participants, family and friends are encouraged to attend.  For more information on registering your poster for the session please click this link: Poster/Demo Registration Tutorial.

Summer @ CENS

A National Science Foundation REU Site

CENS encourages undergraduates to become involved in CENS, particularly through our summer undergraduate research experience. The eight – ten week annual summer program provides undergraduates the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in CENS labs; to work with CENS faculty, staff, and graduate students; and to participate in research, professional development, and social activities with other CENS undergraduate scholars.

Program Information

The Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) is currently recruiting for our 2011 Summer@CENS Undergraduate Scholars Program. Our fully-funded program will be hosted at UCLA beginning June 20, 2011 for 8 weeks.

Our Center is a major research enterprise focused on developing wireless sensing systems and applying this revolutionary technology to critical scientific and societal pursuits. In the same way that the development of the Internet transformed our ability to communicate, the ever decreasing size and cost of computing components is setting the stage for detection, processing, and communication technology to be embedded throughout the physical world and, thereby, fostering both a deeper understanding of the natural and built environment and, ultimately, enhancing our ability to design and control these complex systems. For a further exploration into CENS technology and the application areas we work with visit our CENS Research Page.

These programs are supported by the following National Science Foundation REU awards: "REU Site at the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing: Sense and Sustainability" grant #CNS-0851698 (PI Dr. Kaiser) and "REU Site at CENS: Sensing Applications in Earthquake and Environment" grant #CCF-0755533 (PI Dr. Jay).

Sample 2011 Projects:

Structural Health Monitoring Team, John Wallace, Ph.D., Civil & Environmental Engineering
CENS interns will work collaboratively with the National Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) undergraduate interns to work on leading-edge NEES earthquake engineering experiments that will provide them practical, hands-on experience with instrumentation, specimen construction, testing and data processing and visualization.

Water & Beach Quality Team, Jennifer Jay, Ph.D., Civil & Environmental Engineering
Water and Beach Quality Team focuses on investigating different water quality parameters in the urban watershed environment.  This includes both freshwater and marine coastal systems that are impacted by anthropogenic factors.

Wireless Health & Instructional Technology Team, William Kaiser, Ph.D., Electrical Engineering
Subject motion classification in the community remains an interesting and very important problem central to nearly all health and wellness initiatives.

Application Deadline: Tuesday, March 1, 2011 (5 PM PST)
