CENS Tech Camp: James Reserve Ecological Facility, Idyllwild, California
As part of the first week, Summer@CENS participants will enjoy a trip to the CENS test bed site located at the James Reserve Ecological Facility in Idyllwild, California. This activity is designed to allow participants to see CENS technology in the field, understand some of the constraints that our researchers work with and get their hands dirty by assisting our researchers in the field.
Professional Development Series
Students will engage a series of workshops that will provide an exposure to the world of academic research. Workshop titles include:
Weekly Progress Meetings
Weekly undergraduate meetings are held once a week on Friday at 11:00 – 1:00 pm in BH 3551. Working groups will be assigned to make presentations every other week. Each student team will be assigned to a particular week and will be given 6 minutes to discuss their project, including a brief update on their project with at least 4 powerpoint slides.
The typical presentation would have a project overview slide, an outline of the overall project/timeline that identifies the current status of work completed, a summary of the work of the preceding two weeks, and a slide that includes next steps, open issues and nagging questions.

Writing Workshop
Summer@CENS participants will be required to complete a final project paper at the end of their tenure at CENS. This project has, in the past, aided students in maintaining good progress of their work through the 8 – 10 weeks as well as aided them in preparing materials to submit for publication in a journal or presentation at a conference. In addition to the Final Paper requirement, students will work in weekly small peer review groups throughout the summer to aid in the process.

Final Poster Session
The culmination of our participant’s work is celebrated at the Summer@CENS Final Poster Session, held at the end of the 8th week of the program. Each team will present a poster reflecting their research over the 8 weeks of the program. The entire CENS community, Summer@CENS participants, family and friends are encouraged to attend.

CENS encourages undergraduates to become involved in CENS, particularly through our summer undergraduate research experience. The eight-week annual summer program provides undergraduates the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in CENS labs; to work with CENS faculty, staff, and graduate students; and to participate in research, professional development, and social activities with other CENS undergraduate scholars.
The Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) is currently recruiting for our 2010 Summer@CENS Undergraduate Internship Program. Our fully-funded program will be hosted at UCLA beginning June 21, 2010 for 8 – 10 weeks.
Our Center is a major research enterprise focused on developing wireless sensing systems and applying this revolutionary technology to critical scientific and societal pursuits. In the same way that the development of the Internet transformed our ability to communicate, the ever decreasing size and cost of computing components is setting the stage for detection, processing, and communication technology to be embedded throughout the physical world and, thereby, fostering both a deeper understanding of the natural and built environment and, ultimately, enhancing our ability to design and control these complex systems. For a further exploration into CENS technology and the application areas we work with visit our CENS Research Page.
These programs are supported by the following National Science Foundation REU awards: "REU Site at the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing: Sense and Sustainability" grant #CNS-0851698 (PI Dr. Kaiser) and "REU Site at CENS: Sensing Applications in Earthquake and Environment" grant #CCF-0755533 (PI Dr. Jay).
Application Deadline: Friday, February 12, 2010 (5 PM PST)
Online Application can be found here.
For more information on our program or application procedures please contact Wes Uehara, Education Project Manager at wuehara@cens.ucla.edu.
