CENS High School and Undergraduate Scholars Program in Participatory Sensing

We will not be hosting a 2012 High School and Undergraduate Scholars Program please check back in March for other high school opportunities with the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Are you a high school or undergraduate student interested in learning more about computer science and engineering? The CENS High School and Undergraduate Scholars Program at UCLA is a chance to gain first-hand experience in a university setting, conducting cutting-edge research on participatory sensing and mobile phone technology.

The CENS High School and Undergraduate Scholars Program provides research opportunities high school students during the summer. Selected CENS High School and Undergraduate Scholars will be a part of an 8 week summer research program in which students conduct hands-on computer science research, learn more about life as a college student, and prepare for college and future careers.

This summer research program provides high school and undergraduate students, particularly community college students, experience working in a university research lab. The program will provide students faculty and graduate student mentors; specially designed research projects; undergraduates assigned to project teams; professional development seminars; and networking, social, and recognition events. As part of the CENS community, participating scholars will also be included in the Center’s ongoing activities.

Underrepresented students and women are encouraged to apply! This program is limited in the number of students that we can support, so if you are interested, please apply by the deadline.

This is a commuter program—we will not be able to offer housing for participating high school students. If funding permits, we may offer a few positions for undergraduate students, but we are currently only considering high school applicants with a preference for students in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

Please contact Wes Uehara at wuehara@cens.ucla.edu for additional information regarding this program.

If you would like to share information about this program, please print out the program flyer (PDF).

Summer High School and Undergraduate Scholar Projects

In 2008, CENS High School and Undergraduate Scholars participated in CENS research projects on teams with high school students, undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff researchers.

2008 projects

In 2009, 2010 and 2011, students were challenged to develop their own campaigns using Android Smartphones and CENS participatory sensing technology. Using ideas from existing CENS projects along with several ideas discussed in brainstorm sessions, students came up with the following projects:
